Cessna Skyhawk plane crashes at Dayton airport killing local business owner.

At approximately 5:45 p.m. today a single Cessna Skyhawk plane crashed at Dayton airport shortly after takeoff, killing prominent local business owner and the planes pilot Lawd Smith.  The weather at the scene was strong rain with a strong driving rain. ” It was taking off 15 minutes ago when it crashed in a field adjacent to the runway. Th control tower tells me the pilot managed to get off the ground but immediately after takeoff he radioed the tower, saying he was having major problems controlling the aircraft. Soon after the plane crashed. This could have been related to the weather, we’re not sure yet.” said Maricia Collins of the Portland Federal Aviation Administration field. In the article All about the Cessna 172 Skyhawk writer Anders states that the Cessna plane has a reputation for being the safest general aviation aircraft available and is often used a trainer aircraft even in, but not limited to, the military. In fact the Cessna 172 has a world record for flight endurance lasting 64 days, 22 hours, and 19 minutes. Lawd Smith, the planes pilot, was a prominent local business owner in town.  Lt. Micheal Walton of the police department states that Smith had planned to fly to central Oregon for a long weekend.
